Citizen tips take four drunks off Saugeen Shores roads in two weeks

Thanks to citizen tips, four impaired drivers are off the roads in Saugeen Shores.

Saugeen Shores Police Service said May 4 at 9 p.m. officers arrested and charged a 63-year-old Kitchener man for impaired driving – he blew double the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Police said it was the fourth impaired-related driving arrest since April 23 – all thanks to calls from the public.

“The information we receive from citizens is vital in keeping our roads [safe],” SSPS said in a Facebook post.

May 1 at 4 p.m. police were dispatched to a fail-to -remain collision near Rowland’s Independent Grocer’ in Port Elgin.

Police said witnesses led them to a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle near Port Elgin Main Beach. Police located the driver walking in the area, and as result of an investigation, a 47-year-old man from Newfoundland was charged with operation while impaired (80plus), dangerous operation, failure to stop after accident, and obstruct police.

The man’s license was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

A 65-year-old Saugeen Shores woman was charged with impaired driving after police were tipped to an erratic driver April 29 at 8 p.m. in Port Elgin.

Police said if you suspect a driver is impaired, it is a crime in progress and public safety is at risk. Call 9-1-1 to report the incident.
